Anyi Ji

Anyi Ji (b. 1998, Hangzhou, China) is a Chinese artist based in London, working primarily with ceramics.

Her practice explores the subtle relationships between material, spirit, and the power of transformation and transience. Drawing from Chinese philosophical and spiritual traditions, she engages with concepts such as the Five Elements, yin and yang, and the balance of opposing forces. She seeks to give form to invisible energies and emotional states. Through unpredictable glaze reactions and the ritual of firing, she captures fleeting moments and suspended tensions. Her sculptural pieces create quiet, open spaces that invite contemplation, presence, and a deeper sensory connection with the viewer.

The visual language of her work is inspired by the blurred imagination of mountain silhouettes and the transient impermanence of seasonal changes. From the blossoming and withering of flowers, she perceives the brevity of life, allegorically symbolising the helplessness of living beings before death and our longing for immortality. Life seems to change and disappear in an instant, yet when the mind sheds the veil of ignorance and illusion that separates it from truth, life and death become merely two sides of the same coin - water emerging from fire. Creating with clay and fire is both a physical act and a spiritual pursuit.
